Quality Time Or Cabin Fever On Wheels?

posted on 12 February 2012

My childhood holidays consisted purely of caravanning holidays, and looking back I still find it sometimes difficult to discern whether to put these in the category of happy memories, or past endurance tests. Belonging to a family of six, it didn't take long for our caravan to be given the nickname 'mobile zoo' - a caravan we'd picked after weeks of looking at caravans for sale. We would frequent several caravan sites in one year all spread over the English countryside. Because the local entertainment was often dubious and at best sparse, (I think of the tank museum in Dorset when I say this), we would create our own entertainment in the children's play area. I confess this often consisted of teaming up with our relatives who had arrived in their own caravans and starting a rumble with the other kids in the park. Our highest acheivement was becoming so unpopular in the play area that random kids formed a gang of their own called 'The End Of The Thompsons', and let's just say their membership count far outnumbered ours. Aside from this, I can honestly say these times created memories we still laugh about today.
